About Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines, or Compania Panamena de Aviacion, was founded in 1944 and has been flying since 1947. It is the national airline of Panama and is based at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City. It also has additional centres for operation located at La Aurora International Airport, El Dorado International Airport, Augusto C. Sandino International Airport and Juan Santamaria International Airport. The airline uses a mixture of Boeing and Embraer aircraft to operate its services.

Using a fleet of over 100 planes, Copa Airlines serves more than 70 different destinations in the Americas and Caribbean. Just some of its many popular destinations include Cancun, Toronto, Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. It became Star Alliance's first Latin American member in 2012 after leaving SkyTeam. Along with other Star Alliance members, it has codeshare agreements for flights with Aeromexico, Emirates, Cubana De Aviacion, Linea Aerea Amazonas, Gol, TAME, KLM and Condor. It also owns Copa Airlines Colombia.

Online check-in

Passengers wanting to check in for Copa Airlines flights online can do so between 36 hours and 1 hour before take-off. Online check-in on United States routes opens 24 hours before the flight is scheduled to take-off. To be able to check in online, passengers must have an e-ticket. It is not possible for minors travelling alone, passengers with special requirements, passengers departing from Havana, or those with young children to check in online. Passengers who are able to check in online can also use the service to choose a seat for their flight. Airport check-in is also available.

Hand luggage allowance

Passengers are allowed 1 item of hand luggage on a Copa Airlines flight. The maximum weight for this is 10 kg while the maximum combined length, width and height must be no greater than 115 cm. On flights within Panama or Colombia, passengers' hand luggage allowance is reduced to a maximum weight of 5 kg. Ticket holders may also bring 1 personal item such as book or magazine, childcare bag, handbag, coat or laptop. Business class passengers who are also Star Alliance Gold, ConnectMiles Gold, Platinum or Presidential Platinum members may bring 1 extra item of hand luggage also weighing up to 10 kg.

Checked baggage allowance

Although the checked baggage allowance on a Copa Airlines flight varies by route, the most common allowance is as follows. Economy class passengers are allowed 1 piece of checked luggage weighing up to 32 kg or 2 pieces each weighing up to 23 kg. Business class passengers are allowed 2 pieces of checked luggage, each weighing up to 32 kg. Excess baggage charges are in place for any luggage that does not fall within a passenger's allowance. The maximum weight for any single item of luggage is 45 kg, or 32 kg on the Bahamas and Cuba routes. Any luggage above this limit will not be carried by the airline and must be sent as cargo instead.
