About China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines is one of the world's biggest airlines, and is based in the Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, with major hubs at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport. It also has two smaller hubs at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport and Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, as well as various focus cities within China, including Chengdu, Harbin and Xi'an. It has the biggest air-fleet in Asia, and currently has over 500 aircraft. The airline expanded after mergers with Zhongyuan Airlines, China Northern Airlines and China Xinjiang Airlines.

China Southern Airlines flights serve nearly 200 destinations over numerous routes. Popular among those are flights to Auckland, London Heathrow, New York and Sydney. It is a member of the SkyTeam alliance and was the first Chinese carrier to join a global alliance. It also has codeshare arrangements in place with Asiana Airlines, Japan Airlines, WestJet, Qantas, Pakistan International Airlines and Thai Airways.

Online check-in

Check-in can be completed online from 24 hours before a flight up until 1 hour before take-off. This service however is not available on all China Southern Airlines flights. Passengers on flights departing from Taiwan, Macau or Hong Kong will not be able to check in online, and nor will passengers requiring special assistance or minors. If they cannot complete their check-in online, passengers also have the option of checking in at the airport. The latest that passengers can check in at the airport for a China Southern Airlines flight is half an hour before take-off, or 45 minutes prior to departure for flights to or from the United States.

Hand luggage allowance

Hand luggage allowance on China Southern Airlines flights is the same for both domestic and international routes. Economy, Premium Economy and Business class passengers are all entitled to carry on board 1 item of hand luggage that can weigh up to 5 kg. Passengers travelling in First Class are allowed 2 items of hand luggage, each of which can weigh up to 5 kg. All items of hand luggage are subject to a maximum combined height, length and width of 115 cm. If they exceed any of these regulations passengers will have to check in the baggage, which may result in an additional fee.

Checked luggage allowances os China Southern Airlines flights are piece-based on European and American routes, and weight-based on Oceania, Middle Eastern and Asian routes. On European routes, Economy class passengers are allowed 1 item weighing up to 23 kg, while Premium Economy passengers are permitted 2 items weighing up to 23 kg. Business class and First Class passengers are allowed 3 items each weighing up to 23 kg. On American routes Economy class and Premium Economy passengers are allowed 2 items each weighing up to 23 kg, Business class passengers are allowed 2 items each weighing up to 32 kg and First Class passengers are allowed 3 items each weighing up to 32 kg.

On Oceania routes China Southern Airlines Economy passengers are allowed 30 kg, Premium Economy passengers are allowed 35 kg, Business passengers are allowed 40 kg and First class passengers are allowed 45 kg. On Middle Eastern routes Economy passengers are allowed 40 kg, Premium Economy passengers are allowed 45 kg, and Business or First class passengers are allowed 50 kg. On Asian routes, Economy passengers are allowed 20 kg, Premium Economy passengers are allowed 30 kg, Business passengers are allowed 35 kg and First class passengers are allowed 40kg.
