Gulf Air was founded in 1950 and was originally called Gulf Aviation. It is Bahrain's flag carrier airline and has its headquarters located in Muharraq, Bahrain, with a main operating hub situated nearby at Bahrain International Airport. The airline is currently wholly owned by the Bahraini Government. There are nearly 30 planes in its fleet, all of which are Airbus A320s, A321s and A330s.

Gulf Airlines flies to more than 40 different destinations all over the world covering more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa and the Americas. Out of its many destinations, its most popular routes include its flights to Paris, Austin, Bangkok, London, Chicago, Paris, Atlanta, and Cairo. It also has codeshare agreements with EgyptAir, KLM, Saudia, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Philippine Airways, American Airlines and Royal Jordanian, although it is not an airline alliance member. The earliest that passengers flying with Gulf Airlines can check in online is 24 hours before their scheduled departure time, right up until 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to takeoff. While checking in on online, passengers can select a seat for the journey and print out their boarding cards. The airline also has special baggage drop counters that are designated for passengers who have already checked in online, in order to speed up the process. Online check-in is not possible for children travelling without an adult, passengers who need special assistance, and passengers with paper tickets.

Passengers on Gulf Air flights have their hand luggage allowance determined by their ticket type. Economy class passengers are able to take 1 bag of up to 45 x 40 x 30 cm that weighs no more than 6 kg, while Falcon Gold passengers can take 1 bag up to 55 x 40 x 30 cm plus a briefcase of up to 45 x 40 x 30 cm that must not weigh more than 9 kg combined. Infants can also bring 1 bag of up to 44 x 35 x 20 cm that must not weigh more than 3 kg. As well as this allowance, passengers can bring certain personal items without having to pay any extra. These include handbags, umbrella, coats, wheelchairs and crutches.

The maximum total weight for checked luggage is 30 kg for passengers travelling on an Economy fare and 40 kg for passengers travelling on a Falcon Gold fare. Infants younger than 2 have an allowance of 10 kg plus permission to bring a stroller and car seat. Members of the airline's Falconflyer program also receive additional allowances that include +15 kg for Silver members, +20 kg for Gold members and +25 kg for Black members. The maximum size for a single item of checked luggage is 95 x 75 x 45 cm while the maximum weight is 32 kg. Pieces of luggage that are found to be larger or heavier than this will not be carried by the airline.
