About Air Malta

Malta's flag carrier Air Malta was founded in 1973 and is based at Malta International Airport with headquarters in Luqa. The airline is a state-owned carrier and became operational in 1974, the same year in which Malta became a republic. It is the successor to the previously existing carrier, Malta Airlines. The airline's original routes were to London, Frankfurt, Paris, Manchester and Tripoli.

Today their fleet of 8 Airbus planes are used to fly routes to nearly 40 destinations across North Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Some of the airline's top destinations include Algiers, Berlin, London (both Gatwick and Heathrow Airports) and Istanbul. While the airline has codeshare agreements in place with Swiss International Airlines, Aeroflot, Turkish Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air France, Emirates, Lufthansa, Meridiana, Etihard Airways and Air France, it is not a member or an affiliate of any alliance such as SkyTeam, oneworld or Star Alliance.

Online check-in

Checking in for an Air Malta flight can be done online starting from 24 hours and up until 1 hour before a flight is scheduled to take off. Online check-in is only available on flights that leave from Vienna, Rome, Catania, Paris, Moscow, Munich, Frankfurt, Geneva, London, Berlin, Athens, Lyon, Luqa, Manchester, Marseille, Milan, Zurich, Dusseldorf and Hamburg. Air Malta check-in can also be performed at the airport. The airline has check-in counters at its airports for passengers' convenience, including separate counters for Club Class passengers. These check-in counters will close approximately 45 minutes before a plane is due to leave.

Hand luggage allowance

Hand luggage allowance on Air Malta flights dictates that all passengers are able to bring 1 piece of hand luggage onto the flight with them. For Economy passengers, this piece can weigh up to 10 kg, while for Club class passengers this piece may weigh as much as 15 kg. Air Malta baggage allowance also has a maximum size of 20 x 40 x 55 cm for hand luggage. Passengers should be capable of lifting their own hand luggage to place it in the overhead storage compartment. Small personal items such as umbrellas, cameras and laptops are also accepted on flights. Any baggage exceeding these allowances will be subject to a fee for having it checked into the hold of the airplane.
