About TAP Portugal

TAP Portugal was founded in 1945 although it only began operations in 1946, and flies to 87 destinations in 34 countries across Europe, Africa and the Americas. It is based in Lisbon and has a hub at the International Airport there as well as one in Porto and at the Cristiano Ronaldo Airport in Madeira. Passengers can collect Tap Victoria points on TAP Portugal flights as part of their frequent flyer program, and these can be redeemed for upgrades and discounts with this airline and its partners.

TAP Portugal is part of the Star Alliance, the largest of such alliances, which includes as members Air Canada and Air New Zealand. In order to increase the number of destinations it flies to, TAP Portugal has entered into a codeshare agreement with over 30 airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways to make booking for its customers much simpler.

How do I check in online with TAP Portugal?

TAP Portugal online check-in allows you access from 36 hours before your flight is due to depart. If you are travelling to the USA this is reduced to 24 hours, but wherever you are flying you can choose your seat and print your boarding pass or download it to an internet-connected device. Some of the African airports require you to pick up your boarding pass once at the airport, even if you have successfully checked-in online, so please check if yours is one of them before arriving for your flight.

TAP Portugal also have a Fly Social program which allows you to connect your flight to your Facebook page. If you choose to do so you will be able to see the Facebook profiles of anyone else on the same flight if they have also taken advantage of this program. This allows you to choose someone that looks like they have the same interests as you to sit next to for a more interesting journey.

What is my checked baggage allowance on TAP Portugal?

The TAP Portugal baggage policy allows each person, unless they have a Tap Discount fare, to take checked baggage of up to 23 kg. Tap Discount ticket holders can purchase hold baggage if they would like to for an additional fee. Each bag cannot be larger than the linear dimensions of 158 cm, and this is measured by adding the height, length and width together. With a Plus or Top Executive fare, the allowance is 2 bags of 23 kg each unless flying Intercontinental when this is increased to 3 bags.

The airline recommends adding your name, address and contact information to both the inside and outside of your hold luggage in case you need to be notified of anything. It is also not advisable to put keys, important documents, perishable goods or fragile items in the hold. For safety, you should keep these on your person or in your cabin baggage.

If you are travelling with sports equipment such as golf clubs, skis or a surfboard, it can be taken in the hold free of charge if it is allowed as part of your free allocation. It does have to comply with the size and weight restrictions, however, and if it is larger or heavier it will be subject to excess baggage fees.

What hand luggage can I take on TAP Portugal?

With the TAP Portugal hand luggage allowance, all passengers are allowed a bag that must not exceed the maximum size of 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. If you have purchased an Economy ticket you will be allowed one of these sized bags up to 8 kg in weight, but Executive Class passengers can take two weighing 8 kg each. Additionally, everyone is allowed a personal item of up to 2 kg and this could be, for example, a laptop bag or small handbag. As well as this maximum weight, the dimensions of the personal item must not exceed 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm. Any item larger or heavier than your allotted allowance will have to be placed in the hold and this will incur a fee.

If possible, your hand baggage must be placed under the seat in front of you. This may not be possible on all seats as bulkhead rows do not have space beneath them, and for safety reasons this will not be allowed if you are on a seat next to an emergency exit. In these cases, the baggage can be placed in the overhead compartments.

It is not possible to place e-cigarettes or lighters into the hold, therefore if you want to travel with this type of item it must be placed in your cabin baggage. However, e-cigarettes are not allowed to be used on the plane itself, so please refrain from using them until you have disembarked or left the destination airport, depending on local rules.
