The United Airlines online check-in option is available 24 hours before your flight and can be completed in English, French or Spanish. The site lets you print your boarding pass or link it to your mobile phone. The screen barcode is all that’s needed at the security checkpoint, letting the airline achieve an almost paperless process. Online check-ins are only offered if your first flight is within the United family and you’re travelling with a maximum of nine people. You must scan your passport using the app or at an airport kiosk. Simply log in to the flight check-in page and enter your eTicket or confirmation number. The United Airlines baggage allowance is a standard 23 kg. Hold luggage is limited to two items of baggage measuring 157 cm. Extra baggage will be charged for, but is only allowed if the plane has sufficient room to accommodate it. Medical and mobility devices generally don’t attract a charge. Passengers may not carry flammable fluids, including paints, mace and other defence sprays. E-cigarettes must be packed in carry-on luggage. Valuable items, such as antiques and business equipment, are not covered by the airline’s insurance, so make sure you cover them before you fly. Most sports equipment is allowed, as long as the service charge is covered, but self-propelled items such as hoverboards are restricted. If you’re travelling with partners such as Lufthansa, your baggage restrictions may vary, particularly if you’re not flying from one of the airline’s nine hubs.
The United Airlines hand luggage size limit is 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm. Basic economy travellers are allowed to take one bag and a personal item such as a laptop bag or purse as carry-on luggage. You’re allowed to carry food you bought at the airport, and medical devices such as oxygen or crutches. Pet carriers are allowed but may be charged for. Small musical instruments can be taken on board if they can be stowed away under your seat. The airline allows you to carry a stroller and car seat for every child younger than 2. Infant tickets are about 10% of standard flight costs unless your child doesn’t need her own seat. If you’re taking liquid medications, they must be bottled in 3.4-ounce containers and declared at the checkpoint. All medications must be accompanied by a doctor’s prescription or letter.
