About Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 and commenced operations in the same year. Its fleet of 49 aircraft fly to 33 destinations worldwide from hubs in London Heathrow and London Gatwick, as well as a base in Manchester. The fleet includes four Airbus A330-200, ten Airbus A330-300, eight Airbus A340-600, eight Boeing 747-400 and seventeen Boeing 787-9. Virgin Atlantic has codeshare agreements with Air China, Air New Zealand, Delta Airlines, Flybe, Jet Airways, Singapore Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Virgin Atlantic is controlled by Virgin Atlantic Limited which is currently owned 51% by the Virgin Group and 49% by Delta Air Lines, though Air France-KLM is set to acquire a 31% stake. The airline’s frequent flyer programme is the Flying Club, which offers rewards including flights and upgrades. Members can also earn and spend miles with Virgin Atlantic partners, including hotel stays with Hilton Honors, Marriott Rewards and Best Western, shopping partners including Waitrose, Tesco Clubcard, Jamie's Italian and John Lewis and Virgin Group partners, including Virgin Holidays, Virgin Trains, Virgin Money and Virgin Hotels.

How do I check in online with Virgin Atlantic?

Virgin Atlantic online check-in is the quickest and simplest way for Virgin Atlantic passengers to check in. It can be done either on the Virgin Atlantic website or the Virgin Atlantic app (downloaded from the App Store or Google Play) from 24 hours to 70 minutes prior to departure. When passengers check in online they can view and change their seat, or upgrade their seat if required. They can also add baggage and Advance Passenger Information or API (information on passports that is required by some countries). And they can print their boarding pass or download it to their phone to save time at the airport. Passengers can check in online using their booking reference, eTicket number or Flying Club number.

What is my checked baggage allowance on Virgin Atlantic?

This information refers to Virgin Atlantic tickets beginning VS – partner airlines such as Delta Air Lines may have different restrictions. Economy Classic and Delight passengers may check in one bag free of charge. This should measure a maximum 90 cm x 74 cm x 43 cm and weigh a maximum 23 kg. Economy Light tickets do not have any checked baggage allowance included, though this can be purchased. Premium passengers can take two pieces of baggage with the same size and weight restrictions as Economy class. Upper Class passengers can check in three pieces of baggage with the same size restrictions as Economy and Premium but weighing up to 32 kg. Infants with their own seat have the same allowance as adults, and infants without their own seat can have one 23 kg bag except if flying Economy Light. All Flying Club Gold members are entitled to an extra bag up to 23 kg. Passengers cannot pool their Virgin Atlantic baggage allowance.

Flights to and from Delhi, Lagos and Johannesburg allow passengers an extra allowance. This is two checked bags for Economy Classic or Delight passengers flying UK or US to/from Delhi, UK or US to/from Lagos and US to/from Johannesburg, and three bags for Premium passengers flying to/from Delhi and UK or US.

Musical instruments can be checked in then carried through to the departure gate as a precaution against any damage, and they are then placed in the hold. An excess baggage fee may need to be paid if it means the passenger exceeds their allowance. Sports equipment may be taken instead of an included bag if it weighs 23 kg or less and does not exceed certain dimensions, depending on the type of equipment.

What hand luggage can I take on Virgin Atlantic?

Virgin Atlantic cabin baggage allowance restrictions are as follows. All cabin bags must be a maximum of 23 cm x 36 cm x 56 cm. Economy and Premium passengers can take one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10 kg. Upper Class passengers can take two pieces of hand baggage weighing up to 12 kg for one bag, or up to 16 kg of combined weight. Babies and toddlers aged 0-23 months can take one bag weighing up to 6 kg. Children aged two and above are entitled to the same amount of hand baggage as an adult. Passengers travelling with infants can also take a fully collapsible pushchair and a car seat.

All was excellent. I was disheartened to hear on meeting 3 ladies in Atlanta that their direct flight from Manchester to NYC was cancelled. Rerouted thru Atlanta wasn’t fair in my opinion. I guess everyone’s experience is different.
