Once you’ve toured the Guinness brewery, strolled through Temple Bar, and soaked up all that Dublin has to offer, it’s time to explore the myriad shades of green found throughout Ireland with short excursions from the capital. Extending your stay in Ireland is almost essential to experience (at least!) one of the day trips we offer with Tourism Ireland.
That’s why we present these 5 excursions from Dublin that will enchant you with Ireland’s spectacular greenery.
1. Wicklow Mountains
Welcome to the garden of Ireland, where the Sally Gap road winds through the mountain profiles, offering an ideal route for hikers and cyclists. One of the highlights of this excursion is the view of Lough Tay (also known as the Guinness Lake), a true marvel of nature nestled against the cliffs, as well as the beautiful and photogenic Lough Dan.
2. Malahide Castle and Gardens
Malahide Castle, on the Dublin coast, strikes an almost perfect balance of elegance, art, history, and nature, surrounded by over 100 hectares of woodlands and gardens. Obviously, it’s impossible to explore them all, but after a long stroll, you’ll need to refuel. Our recommendation? A tasty lunch at the Avoca Café accompanied by an Irish coffee.
3. Trim
Trim Castle, famously featured in Braveheart, offers a captivating glimpse into Ireland’s Norman history. Getting to this epic setting doesn’t require a car, as Bus Éireann’s route 111 maintains regular service.
4. Glendalough
Even without a car, you can visit Glendalough. Just hop on the St. Kevin’s bus from Dublin city centre, and in an hour, you’ll be there, away from the city’s noise and surrounded by intense greenery. The extensive monastic community that thrived here for centuries and the walks around the lake and through the forest are some of Wicklow’s top attractions.
5. Powerscourt House and Gardens
This place is tucked away in one of Wicklow’s many valleys. Powerscourt House mansion is beautiful, but it would be incomplete without the beauty of its gardens and fountains. To get here, you can take bus routes 145 and 44, which stop in Enniskerry, leaving you just a 10-minute walk from the estate.
