This former fishing island, located just nine miles from Cancún, is perfect for a day trip. Awarded Pueblo Mágico status (meaning 'magical town'), Isla Mujeres is famous for its relaxed and Caribbean atmosphere, ideal for switching off.
At just over four miles long and under half a mile wide, the island has few cars, and golf carts are the main means of transport. These allow you to easily explore its beaches, natural parks and the temple honouring the Mayan goddess Ixchel, located in Punta Sur.
Upon arrival in Isla Mujeres, rent a golf cart and head to Playa Norte, one of the top 10 best beaches in the world. With its fine white sand and crystal-clear, shallow waters, Playa Norte is a true paradise, unlike the southern beaches with their strong currents and dark turquoise-blue waters.
Enjoy spectacular views of the island and the coast of Cancún by zip-lining over the Caribbean Sea, or admire the colourful fish and coral reefs at Garrafón Park. Explore the depths of the sea at MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte — Underwater Art Museum), an innovative project designed to protect reefs and counter climate change. The museum, located between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, features three galleries where marine life finds refuge among the sculptures.
For lovers of diving, not to be missed is Manchones Reef, home to the Cruz de la Bahía (Cross of the Bay), a bronze cross popular with underwater photographers and divers.
In the centre of the island, you'll find shops and restaurants serving Tikin Xic, a traditional fish dish comprising a delicious fillet marinated in an achiote and orange sauce, wrapped in a banana leaf.
